Govt preparing grounds for my arrest: Geelani

Srinagar: Chairman of breakaway Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday alleged Government was preparing grounds for his arrest by implicating him in a false case to make the amalgam ineffective in the run up to Lok Sabha polls. 'Government wants to make Hurriyat, the effective voice of people, ineffective and malign its chairman at the time of elections to force people to vote in the polls,' Geelani told a public meeting at Litter-Pulwama in south Kashmir. He alleged the Government was raising the bogey of Income Tax evasion against him. Geelani was commenting on reports that Income Tax department has asked him to cough up Rs 3 crore as penalty for not disclosing assets found at his residence during search operations in 2001. 'Income Tax department under pressure from the Home Ministry has leaked the news about about the cooked up tax evasion against me on the occasion of elections to implicate me and my relatives in false cases,' Geelani said. He alleged 17 attempts on his life were made between 1995 and 2000 and 'grounds are being prepared for my arrest.'
