3,000 terrorists being trained in PoK: George Fernandes

New Delhi: Around 3,000 terrorists are currently being trained in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, Defence Minister George Fernandes told Lok Sabha on Wednesday. 'Intelligence inputs indicate that approximately 3,000 terrorists are being trained in training camps in Pakistan occupied Kashmir,' Fernandes said in a written reply to a question. 'The situation on the LoC remains the same.'He said adequate measures were in place to 'thwart Pakistan designs and intercept terrorist groups attempting to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir.'In reply to a separate question, Minister of State for Home Affairs Swami Chinmayanand said that 180 Pakistan-backed 'terrorist modules' had been broken in India over the past five years with the arrests of 596 people.He said another 96 'espionage modules' for Pakistan had been 'detected' during the same period.Chinmayanand said there was a 'slight decline in terrorist activities' around India in the year to June 2003 compared with the corresponding six months of 2002.However, in response to another question, he said there had not been any 'significant change' in Kashmir.He said between March and June this year there were 1,116 'terrorist' incidents in Kashmir compared with 681 during the same time of 2002.During the period this year, 494 'terrorists,' 311 civilians and 106 security force personnel had been killed in Indian Kashmir, the minister said.
