| The year 2003 promises new beginnings for the people of Jammu & Kashmir. Despite continued violence, including targetted political killings, the mood in the state clearly is for peace. The generation that has come of age during the 1990s has seen it all - violence, fear, loathing and desperation. This is the generation that wants out of the cycle of violence and an opportunity to do something with their lives. Will the powers that influence Jammu & Kashmir’s future allow change? Or will money, guns, intolerance and narrow views once again waste an opportunity? Only the year 2003 as it unfolds can tell what is to come. But whatever the final outcome, the year 2003 will go down in history as the year of the Kashmiri.
