Washington DC: The United States on Tuesday said the terrorist attack on Amarnath pilgrims in Jammu and Kashmir was aimed at scuttling efforts towards a political solution of the Kashmir problem and escalating tensions in the region. State Department officials said that ''such attacks are clearly aimed at escalating tensions in the region and preventing movement towards a political resolution of the Kashmir conflict.'' ''We have consistently condemned the ongoing violence in Kashmir and do so on this occasion as well. This vicious attack on a group of peaceful pilgrims was carried out with a clear intent to create widespread fear in a civilian population.'' ''As we have said on numerous occasions, violence will not bring peace to Kashmir,'' the officials said.
