Jammu: The Army has begun limited de-mining operations from certain areas of the LoC and the IB. De-mining operations have begun in border areas prone to floods. Floods can wash away mines, exposing civilians and Armymen to danger. Shifting mines are very difficult to locate, say Army authorities. The mines had been laid as part of the military build-up on the border since January. Defence officials said de- mining operations are being carried out in Ranbir Singh Pora, Samba and Akhnoor. These areas usually receive heavy rainfall during the monsoon. Lieutenant-General JBS Yadava, Corps Commander, 16 Corps, said de-mining operations were being carried out only in high-risk areas. The operations are quite cumbersome and time-consuming. Once these areas are de-mined, farmers will be permitted to work in their fields.
