New Delhi: In a surprise move, Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan, head of the Kashmir Committee set up by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, has appealed to the Hurriyat Conference to participate in the coming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. ‘‘Qayyum yesterday phoned (Hurriyat chairman) Abdul Ghani Bhat and told him that the Hurriyat Conference should participate in the elections,’’ Mohammed Faiz Naqshbandi, a member of the Pakistani chapter of the Hurriyat, told reporters here on Wednesday. However, according to Naqshbandi, Bhat made it clear that ‘‘Kashmiris will never take part in the polls’’. Naqshbandi said Sardar Qayyum is garnering support for the ‘‘sham elections’’ and ‘‘is busy paving the way for it’’.
