5 Jawans killed, 3 injured in fidayeen attack, blast

Jammu: In the stepped-up militancy related incidents, five security personnel were killed and three others were injured in the fidayeen attacks and a blast while the terrorists gunned down two civilians, set ablaze a passenger bus and blasted four electric poles across Jammu region today. Four terrorists and a VDC member were also killed in two separate encounters while a child died in an explosion and two others were critically wounded. Terrorists set off a powerful Improvised Explosive device (IED) under an army Gypsy at village Sungri on Mahore-Chasana road at 1155 hours today blasting the vehicle. Two army jawans were killed and two others were seriously injured in the explosion in which the Gypsy was completely damaged. Terrorists escaped after triggering the explosion. Troops sealed the area and launched a search operation to hunt down the terrorists. While two army jawans—Bhagwan Singh and Ravinder Singh of 19 Punjab— died on the spot, two critically injured soldiers were airlifted to Command Hospital in Udhampur. The IED had been planted by the terrorists after digging a small portion of the kucha road about three kms ahead of Sungri. It, however, couldn’t be ascertained immediately that whether the IED went off with passing of army Gypsy over it or was detonated with a remote control device. Army officers alongwith explosive experts visited the spot for investigations. A group of three fidayeens attacked a camp of BSF’s 142 battalion at Kalakote, just yards away from Kalakote police station at 0430 hours today. The fidayeens first fired five grenades at the camp and then opened firing. BSF sentry on guard duty Man Bahadur became first victim of the attack followed by another constable Ashok Kumar. The third BSF jawan Ganga Parsad was seriously injured. The BSF jawans retaliated from their camp but the fidayeens managed to escape. Injured BSF jawan has been hospitalised in serious condition. In the morning, BSF and police personnel carried out a joint search operation to eliminate the fidayeens but they remained untraced. Late this evening, army killed two terrorists in Kalakote. It couldn''t be gathered immediately as to whether the slain terrorists were involved in the fidayeen attack or not. Terrorists gunned down a recruit constable Khursheed Ahmed (No. 966-D) son of Anwar Malik at his residence in Bharat area of Doda last night. The recruit constable was posted in District Police Lines (DPL) Doda and was on casual leave. A joint team of police, STF and army rushed to Bharat this morning for investigations. Three terrorists entered into the house of Mohd Nasir son of Ghulam Nabi at village Tarkassi under jurisdiction of Darhal police station in Rajouri district last night and shot him dead. They also set ablaze the house of Mohd Nasir and Mohd Bashir, a cook in Darhal police station, before fleeing. Same group of terrorists later attacked the house Mohd Ashraf son of Mohd Shaffi at Chumbi Trar in Darhal and gunned him down, the sources said. A police party today visited Tarkassi and Chumbi Trar for searches. Three children fiddled with a grenade, presuming it as a toy, resulting into an explosion at village Changloo in Banihal tehsil of Doda district at 1330 hours today. The grenade exploded killing a child on spot and seriously injuring two others. Deceased child has been identified as Mohd Aslam, 10, son of Abdul Rashid and the injured as Mohd Aslam, 11 son of Abdul Rehman and Nissar Ahmed, 10, son of Mohd Rafiq, all residents of Changloo. Injured have been admitted to the sub district hospital of Banihal. Sources said the children had gone to graze their cattle atop a hill where they found a grenade and started playing with it, leading to a blast. Troops of 20 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Task Force (STF) Banihal gunned down two terrorists at village Srachi, about five kms from Banihal last night. Slain terrorists have been identified as Asham Sajjad alias Abu Akash R-o Rawalpindi and Atta Mohd son of Ahmedu R-o Chapnari, Banihal. Two AK-56 rifles, three magazines, four grenades and 60 rounds were recovered from the scene of encounter. According to sources, the killed terrorists were involved in the killing of a civilian Shabir Ahmed in Banihal on March 26 night. A Village Defence Committee (VDC) member Anchal Singh was killed in an encounter with the terrorists at village Thiloo in Mohra Kallar area of Arnas in Udhampur district this morning. Initially, the terrorists escaped but they were again trapped by a joint team of police and VDC members in a surrounding forest area. Operation was on till late tonight when the reports last came in. Terrorists triggered an IED explosion at a KV line blasting four electric poles at village Kharak Panja in Kalakote tehsil of Rajouri today. Power supply in some villages was disrupted due to damage caused to the electric poles, the sources said. Another group of terrorists set ablaze a passenger bus No. 3481 JKS at Kotli Kalaban in Gambhir area of Rajouri yesterday afternoon. Passengers were allowed to board off the bus before it was torched by the terrorists. Two houses and three shops were gutted in a devastating fire in Thathri town of Doda district last night. The burnt houses belonged to Ali Mohd Mochi and Abdul Suban Mochi. The damaged shops belonged to Ajit Kumar, an electrician, Hukam Singh, a bakery shop and a private hotel. Reasons behind the fire were being ascertained. However, it was stated to be an accidental fire.
