JAMMU: Militants shot dead eight members of a family, including four children, in southern Kashmir on Sunday night, police officials said on Monday. The massacre took place in Salva village in the Mendhar area of southern Poonch district, some 240 km northwest of Jammu.According to B K Kundal, deputy superintendent in the Jammu police control room, a group of suspected militants broke into the house of Zakar Hussain during the night on Sunday and shot dead Hussain and seven of his family members.Three other people were seriously injured.Kundal said the motive for the killings was still unclear, although militants have in the past targetted the families of Muslims who they suspect of acting as informants for the security forces in Kashmir.Kundal said security personnel had cordoned off the village and its surrounding in a hunt for the killers.
