Blast in J&K High Court; 15 killed in shootouts

SRINAGAR: A powerful grenade, targeted at a security vehicle, missed its mark and exploded in the compound of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court but caused no casualty, while nine militants and two securitymen were among 12 people killed in three encounters in south Kashmir on Friday. The spokesman said that militants hurled a grenade towards a security vehicle parked outside the boundary wall of Jammu and Kashmir High Court near the busy Jehangir Chowk. But the grenade missed the target and exploded in the compound of the court with a big bang. Militants also hurled a grenade towards a security picket at Karan Nagar in downtown Srinagar on Friday. No one was injured in the blast, he said. Meanwhile, security forces shot dead six militants of Hizbul Mujahideen in an encounter during search operations at Lakshubahak-Doodhkachan in Anantnag district, the spokesman said, adding arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain. Two militants of Harkat-ul-Jehad-i-Islami, including a Pakistani national, were killed by the Army at Kapran in Anantnag on Friday, he said, adding a security jawan and a civilian were also killed in the shootout. In the third encounter, the spokesman said that a sub-inspector of the Border Security Force was killed when militants ambushed a patrol party at Shadipora in Pulwama district. The securitymen fired back, killing one militant.Two militants and a newly elected sarpanch were killed and four securitymen injured in militancy-related violence in the Jammu region since Thursday night, an official spokesman said.
