Promotions apart, 2100 youth recruited in J&K Police during 2001: Spokesman

JAMMU: A police spokesman to-day said that besides giving promotions to a large number of police personnel, nearly 2100 physically well built unemployed educated youth of the state, particularly of the far flung areas, were recruited in different ranks during the year 2001. Giving break-up of the recruitment, he said 1971 youth were recruited as Constables, 41 as Followers, 43 as Sub-Inspectors, 37 as ASIs in Ministerial wing and 3 as ASIs in the Executive wing of the police. Among the 1971 newly recruited Constables, 540 were SPOs who were inducted and regularised as Constables on the operational basis. 23 youth, too, were appointed as Followers on operational basis. The spokesman said that out of 1971 recruited Constables, 583 were those who had been recruited as Constables by J&K Police Chief, Mr. A.K. Suri, during the on-spot recruitment drives launched in the remote and comparatively hitherto unrepresented areas of the state. A sizeable number of youth from among the Kashmiri migrants putting-up in camps at Udhampur and Mishriwalla, Nagrota and Muthi in Jammu were also recruited on-spot as Constables. As regards promotions, the spokesman said that 5595 police personnel in different non-gazetted ranks and 65 officers in different gazetted ranks were beneficiaries of promotions during the last year. He said in the promotions in non-gazetted category , 4 Inspectors were promoted as Dy. SSP, 61 Sub-Inspectors were promoted to the rank of Inspectors, 147 ASIs to SIs, 447 HCs to ASIs, 897 Sg. Constables to HCs and 4011 Constables were promoted as Selection Grade Constables. In the Ministerial Wing of the police 7 SIs were promoted as Inspectors, 6 ASIs as SIs and 15 HCs as ASIs. He, however, clarified that 192 police personnel among the promotees as referred to were accorded out-of-turn promotions by the Director General of Police for their outstanding performance in anti-militancy operations. Among the out-of-turn promotees, 137 Constables were promoted as Sg. Constables. In addition, 32 Sg. Constables were given out-of-turn promotions as HCs, 11 HCs were promoted as ASIs, 3 ASIs were promoted as SIs and 9 SIs were elevated to the rank of Inspector. During the year 2001, 65 gazetted officers including those of prosecution wing of Police Department were elevated to their next higher rank. The spokesman said that during the year one Addl. Director General of Police was promoted as Director General of Police, 2 Inspectors General of Police were made as ADGs, 2 Dy. Inspectors General of Police were promoted as Inspectors General of Police and 7 SSP were given promotion to the rank of DIG. He said that 20 Superintendents of Police were promoted as Sr. Superintendents of Police. In the Prosecution Wing, 2 Dy. Directors were elevated to the rank of Joint Director, 6 Chief Prosecuting Officers were promoted as Dy. Directors, five Senior Prosecuting Officers were promoted as Chief Prosecuting Officers and 20 Prosecuting Officers were given the grade of SPOs.
