Army officer, 2 girls among 11 killed in J&K

SRINAGAR: Eleven people, including a JCO, seven ultras and two teenaged girls, were killed and three securitymen injured as militants attacked an Army camp and clashed with security forces in the state since Wednesday night, a police spokesman said on Thursday. Three militants, including a Pakistani national identified as Abu Talib, were killed in two encounters with security forces at Khanater and lower Tipper in the border district of Poonch on Wednesday night, the spokesman said, adding a security personnel was also injured in the shootout. Another Pakistani militant of the Al-Badr outfit was killed in an encounter with the Army at Yamrood in the frontier district of Kupwara early on Thursday, the spokesman said. An Army jawan also lost his life in the encounter, he added. Elsewhere, a junior commissioner officer was killed in an encounter with ultras at Boniwatsar in Kupwara district on Wednesday night, the spokesman said. Later, a search of the area led to the smashing of a hideout from where an AK-47 assault rifle, four magazines with 100 rounds, an under-barrel grenade launcher and a grenade were recovered. Meanwhile, militants shot dead a 16-year-old girl, Gulshan Akhter, inside her house at Palapora in Baramulla early on Thursday, the spokesman said. Another teenaged girl, identified as Hina, was killed by militants at Arampora locality in downtown Srinagar when she was returning home on Wednesday evening, he said. The motive behind the two killings was not known immediately, the spokesman said, adding no militant outfit had owned responsibility for the murders. Two unidentified militants were shot dead by the security forces during search operations at Garend in Badgam district on Thursday, the spokesman said. Prior to the incident, a group of unidentified ultras fired rockets, grenades and opened heavy fire on an Army camp at Dharmona in the same district late on Wednesday night. Two BSF personnel were injured when militants ambushed a security patrol at Tujjan in Pulwama district early on Thursday, the spokesman said. He said that militants also fired upon the police guards posted at Kralpora bridge in Kupwara district on Wednesday night, but no one was hurt in the shootout. Police recovered the body of an unidentified militant along with a pistol, a wireless set and two grenades during search operations at Nagbal forest in Kupwara on Wednesday night, the spokesman said. The militant was believed to have been killed in an encounter with security forces in the area on November 18. Security forces apprehended a militant of the Lashkar-e- Taiba outfit during seach operations at Kenusa-Guzarbal in Baramulla district on Wednesday, the spokesman said. Meanwhile, police recovered two AK-47 rifles, four grenades, 4 kg of explosives and some ammunition from Dhai Chak Domana in Jammu on Thursday morning.
