10 killed in J&K, rocket attack on police HQ

SRINAGAR: Heavily armed militants launched a rocket attack on the Indian Reserve Police (IRP) headquarters in Jammu and continued to target security patrols in Jammu and Kashmir, where 10 people, including five ultras, were killed since Sunday evening, a police spokesman said.Militants, who took positions on peaks around the IRP headquarters in Draba area in Poonch district, fired several rockets at the building which missed the target, he said. It was followed by heavy firing. Police personnel, who were joined by army troops, retaliated and the gunbattle continued for over half-an-hour. The ultras fired more rockets damaging some bunkers and structures before fleeing. Three militants and two jawans were killed in encounters during search operations in Natnusa forest and at Rangwar in Kupwara on Sunday night, he said. Ultras abducted and later killed a civilian in Achabal area in Anantnag, where a former JKLF militant Mohammad Ibrahim Sofi was abducted on Monday. Ultras shot dead a girl at Zampa Kadal in downtown Srinagar. They abducted and killed another civilian in Doda. Security forces gunned down a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant in Tokaran area in Udhampur and a Hizbul Mujahideen ultra in Thatri area in Doda. Militants triggered an IED blast damaging a security vehicle at Pojteng on Srinagar-Jammu national highway on Monday. However, none was hurt, he said. However, a Hizbul spokesman, claiming responsibility for the blast, said the vehicle was completely damaged and the armymen travelling in it were either ''killed or injured.'' Ultras detonated an IED targetting a security vehilce at Delina in Baramulla wounding four civilians. The vehicle passed off safely.
