16 militants killed in Kashmir gunbattles

Jammu: Sixteen militants were among 19 people killed in Jammu and Kashmir, where security forces arrested five foreign mercenaries since Thursday night, official sources said. Troops foiled two infiltration bids from across the Line of Control in Rajouri sector killing eight militants on Friday, they said. A large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants. Two foreign militants Umar Inqilabi and Sajad Hakim were killed by security forces in Gurez sector of Baramulla on Thursday night. In another encounter, army killed a Lashkar militant Mohammad Nazir of Rawalpindi in Milyal forest in Kupwara. Two militants, including self- styled Hizbul Mujahideen district commander Sadiq Ataullah of Afghanistan, were killed by security forces during an encounter in Mughaln area of Rajouri, they said. Havildar Anil Kumar and special police officer Manzoor Ahmed were also killed in the gunfight. Security forces shot dead one militant in Doda and two in Poonch on Friday, the sources said. Police recovered body of a person who was earlier kidnapped from Ramban on Thursday.
