Srinagar: Security forces gunned down 14 militants, most of them foreign mercenaries, when they were trying to sneak into the Kashmir valley from across the Line of Control in Kupwara sector, a defence spokesman said on Thursday. Troops noticed groups of heavily-armed militants trying to infiltrate through Tangdhar, Meelyal, Kangdoor and Nowshera sectors of Kupwara on Wednesday, following which ambush parties were fanned out, the spokesman said. The militants were asked to surrender soon after they crossed into Indian territory from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. However, they opened fire. In the retaliatory action by security forces, 14 infiltrators, mostly foreign mercenaries, were killed. Six militants were killed at Tangdhar, five at Meelyal, two at Kangdoor and another at Nowshera, the spokesman said. A huge cache of arms and ammunition were seized from them.
