50 kg of RDX seized, 15 killed in J&K

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday recovered 50 kg of RDX from a militant hideout and averted a possible tragedy with timely detection of an IED in the state, where 15 people, including 11 militants were killed and three others injured, an official spokesman said. The RDX haul, alongwith with the IED and 60 rounds of ammunition, were seized by the police during a specific raid on an abandoned militant hideout at Chardet-Pakhli in Udhampur distric in Jammu region on Thursday, an official spokesman said. He added that police detected a powerful explosive device on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway near Gulabbagh in Anantnag district. The device was immediately removed and later neutralised by the experts. A police spokesman said that two foreign mercenaries associated with Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen (JUM) outfit were killed and a local militant arrested in Kashmir Valley. The foreign militants, one of whom was identified as Shabir Ahmad, were killed in a joint operation carried out by Army and special operations group at Mori-Machil near Line of Control in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Wednesday night, the spokesman said. Army also arrested a militant, Ghulam Hassan Mir of Al-Barq outfit from Watergam area in Baramulla on Wednesday night. Meanwhile, another militant of Al-Barq outfit, Swariya alias "Qasim" of Biyarikote village in Kupwara surrendered before police and handed over a rifle, three magazines, 90 rounds and eight grenades to the authorities. The official spokesman said that a Panchayat member was shot dead by militants inside his house at Magdhar-Sumber in Doda district on Wednesday night. His son was also injured in the shooting. Militants also gunned down a civilian in Badgam district on Thursday, he said, adding an unidentified militant was shot dead by security forces in Kerni sector of Poonch district Meanwhile, eight militants and a sarpanch were among 10 people killed in separate incidents in Jammu division. An official spokesman said in Jammu that two militants were killed in Bandi Chachi in Kerni area and two others in Sabjain forest during encounters in Poonch district on Thursday. Another militant was shot dead in Surankote area of the same district, he said, adding 35 IEDs and other explosives were recovered from the encounter sites. Two ultras, belonging to Al Badr outfit, were shot dead by security forces in Poonch district on Wednesday, he said. The slain militants have been identified as Zafar Iqbal of Pakistan and Nussar Ahmed of Thanamandi area, the sources said, adding a civilian, who was caught in the cross firing, also got killed. Two Army jawans and a civilian were also injured during the firefight with militants, who managed to escape later. However, security forces continued operation in the area to track down the militants. Another ultra was gunned down by security forces at Malan village in Poonch district on Wednesday evening.
