Guilty troops will be punished

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir government has announced that stern action will be taken against security forces found guilty of excesses on civilians. The security forces have also been instructed to ensure full protection to life and property of the locals in the Valley. While addressing a joint meeting of civil and military officers of Badgam and Srinagar districts on Monday, Jammu and Kashmir Works Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar said that the Government has issued clear instructions to all security agencies to see that peaceful civilians are not put to any harm during their combating operations against militants. Sagar said government would not spare anybody guilty of excesses on innocent people. he added Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had initiated stern action against the security personnel after receiving the complaints against them recently. "Kashmir is a political issue and has to be solved through negotiations," Sagar emphasised, appealing to all sections of people to extend their cooperation to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's peace initiative. The minister said that some vested interests were out to vitiate the age-old communal harmony in Kashmir by targeting minorities as in the recent attacks at Chattisinghpora, Mehjoor Nagar and Wandhama. 'such elements do not want peace to return Kashmir," the Minister added.
