1,400 elected unopposed in J&K panchayat polls

Jammu: AS MANY as 1,400 candidates have been elected unopposed to the panchayats in Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua and Kupwara districts after nominations were withdrawn, Jammu and Kashmir chief electoral officer today said. Fifty-nine of them are sarpanchs. The election authority said 2,911 candidates had withdrawn their nominations. A total of 544 candidates were elected in Mendhar, Balakot Poonch, Mandi and Surankote blocks of Poonch district and 526 in Rajouri Manajkote, Darhal, Budhal, Sunderbani, Kalakote and Nowshera blocks of Rajouri. Of those elected in Kupwara district, 106 were in Tanghdar Teetwal and Keran panchayats of Karalpora block and 224 candidates in Ghagwal, Hiranagar, Kathua and Barnoti blocks of Kathua district. As many as 186 women are among the 12,019 candidates who have filed nominations for elections to the 4,585 panchayats in the Jammu region, according to the chief electoral officer, who is the election authority for the panchayat elections. A total of 2,664 candidates had filed nominations for sarpanch and 9,355 for panch posts.
