NC leader escapes bid on life, 23 killed in J&K

Srinagar: Militants made an abortive attempt on the life of a National Conference (NC) leader and member of legislative council in Jammu and Kashmir, where 21 militants and two securitymen were killed and seven securitymen injured since Tuesday evening. National Conference MLC Haji Buland Khan escaped the militants'' attack while he was on his way to Jammu from Darmari in Udhampur district on Tuesday evening, an official spokesman said here on Wednesday. The militants fired at Khan''s vehicle at Darmari but he escaped unhurt. However, one Mohammad Sultan was injured in the firing and was admitted to a hospital, he said. Security forces shot dead ten militants in two separate encounters at Dofall village and Sathra in the border district of Poonch on Tuesday night and early on Wednesday, the spokesman said. A jawan was killed and two others injured in the encounters which took place during a search of the areas. Ten AK assault rifles, six rockets and a large quantity of ammunition and explosives were recovered from the killed militants, he said. Four Lashker-e-Taiba militants, all residents of Gujranwallan area of Pakistan, were killed in a gun fight with security forces at Shumnag in Kupwara district on Tuesday night. Four rifles, a grenade thrower, 34 rifle grenades and some ammunition were recovered from them, he said.(PTI)
