Srinagar: AMMU AND Kashmir will go to panchayat elections from January 5 next year after a gap of 22 years. Chief Minister Abdullah took the treasury benches by surprise when he declared, ?elections will be held from January 5 come what may?. ?This date will not be changed even if atom bombs are dropped on Kashmir,? the Chief Minister said. Mr Abdullah announced this during a debate on a private members Bill seeking an amendment to the J and K Panchayati Raj Act. The Chief Minister said the polls would be held on non-party basis and that 33 per cent seats in Panchayats would be reserved for women.
