Top Hizbul militant killed in encounter

SRINAGAR: A top Hizbul Mujahideen militant and a Jammu and Kashmir police constable were among eight persons killed in separate incidents in the Kashmir valley since Saturday evening, an official spokesman said here on Sunday.

Manzoor Ahmad Najar alias Kaka Molvi, self-styled deputy district commander of outlawed Hizbul Mujahideen, was shot dead by BSF personnel in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar around 10.30 p.m. on Saturday, he told reporters.

Acting on a tip-off that militants were planning to visit Karan Nagar to conduct reccee of BSF complexes there in order to to attack them, the BSF laid tactical ambushes in the area and spotted the cycle-borne Najar.

When asked to surrender, he opened fire but was given a hot chase and shot dead in a brief encounter, he said, adding a pistol and a grenade were recovered from his possession.

Najar, a resident of Bota Kadal area of downtown Srinagar, was involved in killing of a number of police personnel and in other militancy-related crimes.

Police constable Bashir Ahmed was killed by militants near Rabitar Bridge in Baramulla district's Shadipore when he was questioning the driver of a car which had been intercepted by the police sentry on duty at the bridge, the spokesman said.

The occupants of the car fled after interception but the driver was taken into custody. While the driver was being interrogated, more than 10 militants attacked the security personnel with sophisticated arms leading to the death of Ahmad.

Mushaq Ahmed Mir, a resident of Kakapola in Pulwama district who was injured in the Wagooga encounter in which a militant, a security jawan and four civilians were killed and two others injured on January 28, died at a hospital here on Sunday, the spokesman said.

The police recovered the body of a revenue official (numberdar), Mohammad Sadiq Khan, form Braman-Panzla in Baramulla district on Sunday, he said. Khan had been kidnapped by militants.

The body of Shaheen Ahmadm, who had been abducted by ultras, was recovered from Bande village in Baramulla on Saturday night.

Ultras also kidnapped and killed Abdul Ahad Dar of Rawoosa-Rafiabad in the same disctrict on Sunday, the spokesman said.

He said militants shot dead Qasim Aiwan outside his house at Gund-kangan on Srinagar-Leh national highway on Sunday.

A bullet-riddled body of an unidentified person was fished out from the Jhelum river on the outskirts of Baramulla on Saturday night.

Three policemen were injured when unidentified persons attacked a patrol party at Salar-latti village of Udhampur district in Jammu region. (PTI)
