JAMMU: General secretary, National Conference (NC), Sheikh Nazir Ahmed has said the main thrust of the education policy should be on the building of an all round personality of the young learners.

In a statement issued here today, he said the emphasis of the education policy should be on character building, social and moral values like team spirit, discipline, self help, social service, dignity of labour and proper upbringing.

He said this can be promoted through the extra curricular activities such as sports, mountaineering, regattas, swimming etc which should be given due attention with teaching in class rooms.

Paying warm tributes to late Tyndale Biscow, the pioneer of education in Kashmir, Sheikh Nazir said the motto of school "In all Things be men" summed up by the educational system he introduced in the schools run by this eminent British Missionary.

He said Biscow is still remembered by the people of Kashmir with love and reverence in whose scheme of things character building rated high.

Sheikh Nazir said to inculcate social values in the young learners a citizenship register was regularly maintained in which the good turn done by him was recorded.

This healthy precedent, he said equipped them with the virtues of a good citizen so that when they grow up they turn into useful citizens of tomorrow.

He said extra curricular activities like games, hiking regattas in the Dal Lake and other sports formed the regular feature of the School run by him.

Sheikh Nazir however, expressed the hope that the extra curricular activities being conducted by the schools in the state will go a long way towards the development of an all round personality which should be the main objective of true education.
