Pakistani Troops target Jammu Kashmir Village

10th January 1998

Pakistani troops targeted a forward Indian village, while four powerful explosions across Jammu and Kashmir caused injuries to 37 persons during the past 24 hours.

Militants shot dead a Government employee and abducted his relative even as security forces arrested three militants, including a self-styled publicity chief of al-Jehad and a regimental commander of the Tehreek-Ul-Mujahideen and recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition from them in the valley during the period, an official spokesman said here today.

A militant of the banned Hizbul Mujahideen surrendered at Srinagar yesterday evening and handed over a pistol, one magazine and eight rounds to the authorities. The spokesman said a civilian, Santokh Ram of Chandoo Chack village sustained injuries as he was hit by a bullet fired by Pakistani troops in the R.S. Pora sector of the Jammu region yesterday. Pakistani troops had resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate fire in the sector targeting the forward Indian village of Chandoo Chack and security installations, he said.
