Shifting of Army camp out of Bagh-e-Mehtab leaves the people insecure.

Residents request return of army back to Bagh-e-Mehtab. Army resumes patrolling.

1st September 1997

The army camp at Bagh-e-Mehtab, Distt. Badgam had been shifted to Doniwari, Tehsil Chandoora, Distt. Badgam (6 Kms. Away from Bagh-e-Mehtab) on Aug. 20, 1997.

The reason behind this shifting was that militants frequently visited Doonawari destabilising the law and order situation. This development had created sharp resentment among the residents of Bagh-e-Mahtab. They went to Ali Mohd. Dar, MLA Chadoora A/C and drew his attention in this regard.

On the same day, Ali Mohd. Dar met Ali Mohd Sagar, MOS (Home) and took the matter to him. As suggested by Ali Mohd Sagar, Ali Mohd. Dar met the Commanding officer (CO) of the army camp at Dooniwari, Badgam and brought him into the notice about the growing resentment of the local people of Bagh-e-Mahtab. He assured Ali Mohd. Dar that he would discuss with the Brigadier of Army, JKLI, Shedgarhi, Srinagar in the matter and temporarily arranged army patrolling at Bagh-e-Mehtab in the evening.

Later, Ali Mohd Dar planned to meet the Brigadier of Army, JKLI along with MOS (Home) to put the proposal of stalling another Army camp at Bagh-e-Mehtab at the earliest.

Meanwhile, army patrolling started at Bagh-e-Mehtab in the evening as per the assurance given by C. O. Army camp at Dooniwari. However, a small group (4/5) of militants led by Mohd. Ashraf Kuchey, a PTM of HM visited Bagh-e-Mehtab and collected money from the villagers by using force. They also threatened the villagers as to why they demonstrated their protest to Ali Mohd. Dar, MLA, Chadoora A/C against the withdrawal of the army camp from Bagh-e-Mehtab.
