Harkat's main communication channel smashed, 8 killed

2nd December 1997

SRINAGAR: BSF smashed the main communication channel of the dreaded Harkat-Ul-Ansar (HUA) in Kashmir valley where eight persons were killed and nine securitymen wounded since last evening. Nine ULTRAs including two suspected militants who were extorting money from the people with a toy pistol were also arrested during the period, an official spokesman said today, reports PTI.

The communication link between militants and their mentors in Pakistan was snapped after the BSF seized sophisticated communication centre run by the Pakistan-based HUA at Lar-Ganderbal ridges on the outskirts of Srinagar. The BSF recovered two sophisticated communication sets, a printer, digital key recorder and secret coded digtals from the centre, the spokesman told PTI.

However, no militant was arrested during the raid. Khalid Dass, a sub-inspector of Central Reserve Police Force, was killed and nine securitymen were injured when militants attacked a joint search party at Dabran in Anantnag district of south Kashmir around 10.30 am today. In the ensuing encounter, two militants were also killed, the spokesman said. The two were identified as Tariq Khan, self-styled district commander and Shafi Khan, battalion commander of banned Hizbul Mujahideen, the spokesman said. During the gunbattle, some houses caught fire, the spokesman said.
